Luka Modric has been involved in some of the most high-profile transfer sagas in football over the past two years and at one point, it looked very likely that he would become a Chelsea player. While that move is yet to materialize, Blues defender Branislav Ivanovic says that the midfielder needs to be at a bigger club and Chelsea fits the bill.
Ivanovic, who has again experienced a hugely successful campaign after finishing in the top three of the Blues’ Player of the Year Awards, says that Chelsea need a player like Modric in order to progress. He also said that he feels Modric’s career will be done the world of good by moving to Stamford Bridge, telling Sportske Novosti, “Chelsea need a player like him. He has been playing in England for a while now, he knows the Premier League, he has the right mentality and knows how to play on the level required at Chelsea. He needs to move to a bigger club. I believe at Chelsea he would become an even better player. I urge him to come to Chelsea – he won’t regret it.”
However, it remains to be seen whether or not Modric is still on the Blues’ radar. It is widely known that they tried everything to tempt the Croat to the club last summer, with reports suggesting that Roman Abramovich was prepared to fund a bid as high as £40m.
With Roberto Di Matteo now at the helm, speculation surrounding a possible move to Stamford Bridge has certainly become less obvious in the press. In fact, it is widely thought that Manchester United and Real Madrid are the main pursuers of the 26-year-old, with the Blues thought to be looking at other targets. However, this may change once the bidding opens for the Spurs midfielder.
