It would be fair to say that Dave Whelan has become a somewhat outspoken character this summer, with his rants about Roberto Martinez and more recently the Liverpool chief executive appearing all over the press. However, it’s Chelsea who are now Whelan’s next target, with the Wigan chairman stating that the Blues are “taking the mickey” following their recent offer for Victor Moses.
It is understood that the Blues attempted to steal Moses away from Wigan with a £4m transfer, yet this was flatly rejected by the Latics. Whelan claims that the North West outfit will not even listen to any club offering such derisory figures, saying, “Chelsea would need to get realistic before we would even listen to them. They made a bid and we turned it down flat. At the moment they are taking the mickey. Ideally we’d like Victor to sign a new contract, but it seems the agent, more than the player, wants to move him on.”
However, even though that initial offer has been refused, it’s thought that Roberto Di Matteo will return and make a new offer for the 21-year-old forward. Since joining from Crystal Palace in 2010, Moses has been a revelation at the DW Stadium and was a key player as the Latics managed to avoid relegation last term. Unfortunately for Wigan, as Whelan says, it looks as though this success has got the better of Moses and he is now looking for a move away from the club.
It is understood that Crystal Palace hold a significant sell-on clause in this transfer, meaning that Wigan will be looking for a significant offer before they even think about parting with Moses. Still, with Moses seemingly issuing a desire to leave, it remains to be seen how long the Latics can remain stubborn for and keep hold of their man.
