Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has expressed confidence in Jadon Sancho’s ability to make an impact at Stamford Bridge, with the winger set to make his debut for the Blues this weekend. Sancho, who joined Chelsea on loan from Manchester United on deadline day, spent the second half of last season at Borussia Dortmund, where he helped the German side reach the Champions League final before losing to Real Madrid.
Despite being involved in Manchester United’s pre-season, it was clear Sancho was unlikely to remain at Old Trafford. His public fallout with manager Erik ten Hag and inconsistent performances since his 2021 move to United paved the way for his exit. Now, back in his hometown of London, the 24-year-old forward is looking for a fresh start.
Maresca shared his thoughts on Sancho after watching him train during the international break at Cobham. “He has been exactly what I expected,” Maresca said. “He’s a very good player, a one-v-one player with quality in the last third. I’m sure he’s going to help us.”
Sancho’s Chelsea debut is expected to come on Saturday when they face Bournemouth. The winger will be eager to make an impression, having last scored in the Premier League on the final day of the 2022/23 season against Fulham.
Reflecting on his move to Chelsea, Sancho expressed his excitement: “I’m really excited to be here. London is where I grew up and I’m happy to be back. The manager spoke to me about the project and, for a young player, it’s exciting. Hopefully I can bring goals and assists to the Bridge.”
As Chelsea looks to rejuvenate their attacking options, Maresca will be hoping that Sancho’s return to London marks the beginning of a successful chapter in the winger’s career.
