MARESCA HINTS AT CHILWELL RETURN

Enzo Maresca has suggested that Ben Chilwell may still play a part in Chelsea’s season, despite the uncertainty surrounding the England international’s future at the club. During the summer, Maresca publicly implied that Chilwell might be better off seeking a move elsewhere, as the head coach appeared to favor Marc Cucurella and Renato Veiga for the left-back position in his tactical system.

Chilwell spent part of the summer away from the main first-team squad at Chelsea’s Cobham training base, fueling speculation about a potential exit. Despite links to Turkish clubs, no transfer materialized, leaving Chilwell in limbo as the summer window closed. However, Maresca recently brought the 27-year-old back into the fold, including him in Chelsea’s 25-man Premier League squad and giving him playing time in the 5-0 Carabao Cup victory over Barrow on Tuesday night.

When questioned about potentially relying on Chilwell during the season, Maresca left the door open for his involvement. “Yes, in the moment we need him, why not?” he said. “I said already many times, and I will say again that, as long as Chilly is with us, he is a Chelsea player. And if we need him, we give him a chance and minutes.”

Maresca’s comments suggest that while Chilwell may not be the first choice in the current lineup, he still has a potential role to play, especially if circumstances change throughout the season. It marks a notable shift in tone from the earlier stance Maresca took, indicating a willingness to keep options open with the England international.

Pressed further on whether he regrets advising Chilwell to find a new club over the summer, the Italian manager gave a measured response. “We all make mistakes. Probably yes; probably no. I am here to take decisions. Sometimes they are good decisions, and sometimes they are not good,” Maresca admitted. His candid acknowledgment reflects the complexity of squad management and the difficult choices managers often face in shaping their teams.

“The only thing I can say is that there is not any bad intention from me,” Maresca continued. “It is just to see things and try to think about the best things for the club.” His remarks underscore a pragmatic approach to managing the squad, emphasizing that decisions are made with Chelsea’s overall interests in mind, rather than any personal motives.

Chilwell’s situation now seems more fluid, with Maresca indicating a readiness to utilize the full-back if needed. This flexibility could prove crucial for Chelsea as they navigate a demanding season. While Chilwell’s place in the starting lineup may not be guaranteed, his inclusion in the squad hints at the possibility of him being called upon as the campaign progresses. For now, Chilwell remains a Chelsea player, ready to contribute whenever the opportunity arises.
