Chelsea ease into League Cup fourth round

Chelsea booked their place in the fourth round of the League Cup with a comfortable 2-0 win at League One side Swindon Town.

First half goals from Fernando Torres and Ramires were enough to secure victory for the Blues, who will find out their opponents in the fourth round this evening.

The opener was Torres’ first domestic goal of the season, but his most impressive moment in the game came in the build-up to his side’s second.

The Spaniard was composed in possession before slipping in Ramires, who dinked the ball past goalkeeper Wes Foderingham to put the result beyond doubt.

However, the result came at a heavy price, as the visitors lost new signing Marco Van Ginkel to injury just ten minutes into the game.

The Netherlands international, who was making only his second start since signing from Vitesse Arnhem in the summer, fell awkwardly following a challenge with Swindon’s Alex Pritchard.

Assistant first-team coach Steve Holland told the Metro that the club will have more information this (Wednesday) afternoon once they have the results of his scan.

Meanwhile, the Blues will fight it out with a number of their Premier League rivals in the battle to sign Andrea Pirlo next summer, the Daily Star understands.

Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are also monitoring the Italy international’s situation following reports that he will not be offered a new contract by the Serie A champions.
